Ammonium nitrate production at the country's sole producer, Sable Chemicals, could be seriously compromised by delays in the refurbishment of the electrolysis plant at the company. According to the Industrial Development Corporation's latest results, only five of the 14 electrolyter units at Sable Chemicals (Private) Limited were operational.
The electrolyter is used to produce gaseous hydrogen that is used in local ammonia production and oxygen that is sold to the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company and the Zimbabwe Mining and Smelting Company.
