Having filmed an "exotic" trilogy in China (The Last Emperor), North Africa (The Sheltering Sky), and Nepal (Little Buddha) during a fifteen-year period of self-imposed exile from Italy, Bernardo Bertolucci returned to the West for his latest film. And if, geographically, he came only as far as Tuscany, culturally, the West he embraced was MTV-land.
