PERSONAL income growth slowed in 2007 in most of the nation s metropolitan statistical areas, according to the most recent statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. (1) These areas account for 88 percent of U.S. personal income. Personal income growth slowed in 208 metropolitan areas, increased in 144, and remained unchanged in 11. The average of the personal income growth rates for the nation's 363 metropolitan areas was 6.0 percent in 2007, down from 6.5 percent in 2006. (2)
Other highlights include the following:
* Ninety-two percent of metropolitan areas had growth rates within 3 percentage points of the 2007 average (chart 1).
