To prepare for this column, I conducted an experiment. I asked a number of my friends, whom they thought is the better painter, Monet or Max Liebermann? The overwhelming response: Monet or whom?
In Germany, almost every museum has multiple works by Liebermann, and by one curator's count, Hamburg alone has fifty-two of his paintings. Once or twice a year, there is a Liebermann exhibit in Germany. But there are far fewer venues to see Liebermann's work in America. The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art boast some of Liebermann's graphic works in their collections.
