SAN JOSE, Calif. _ Even as public resentment toward illegal immigrants rose in the early 1990s, the number of undocumented immigrants entering the state had already dropped sharply from its level of previous years, a study released Tuesday suggests.

For instance, the study suggests that in the year that California voters registered their feelings about illegal immigration with the 1992 passage of Proposition 187, estimated illegal immigration was just one-fifth its level of three years before.
