LATE last year, I padded over the road with some eggs for Norma, my excellent and most practical neighbour. As is customary, I walked straight into her kitchen with a cheerful bellow.
She wheeled to meet me, wild-eyed, perspiring, a great knife hanging in her hand. Norma was spattered with blood - her hair, her overall, her pleasant face sprayed vivid scarlet.
More dripped from the blade, red water filled the sink and clotting lumps of the stuff adorned worktop and tiles. In an enormous, bubbling pan, evil-looking parcels simmered, as if I had happened on a cheerful little dinner-party thrown by Hannibal Lecter.
