Local firms prepare for 'aggressive action'

Detroit's largest legal client is preparing a cutback on the law firms it employs and the money it spends.

General Motors Corp.'s war on its legal costs is expected to winnow high-cost and inefficient counsel, and result in cost-containment measures on many others.

"We want quality, efficiency and productivity," said Frank Jaworski, the GM senior attorney who is leading the company's drive to reduce ballooning legal costs.

In Detroit, 15 firms represent GM, as do 40 others throughout the state, according to the Martindale-Hubbell law-firm directory. GM works with about 700 outside law firms.
