Miles Davis and Gil Evans together again
IN THE MID-'50s, TRUMPETER MILES Davis collaborated with the arranger-conductor Gil Evans on three big-band albums that have never been surpassed as musical pillows to dream on. "Miles Ahead," "Porgy and Bess" and "Sketches of Spain" are landmark jazz recordings, elegant but never cold attempts to expand the territory of the big band. Evans's intrepid arrangements support Davis's lyrical, blues-tinged horn with the musical equivalent of a jeweler's settings as they voyage from Broadway melodies to the folk songs of Spain.
