While Starbucks Corp. -- still king of the hill when it comes to java joints--slated several of its underperforming shops for closure, and other coffee chains such as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf are gaining ground here, an East Coast entrant thinks it has the right stuff to roast the competition.
A franchised establishment of Virginia-based Daily Grind Unwind, which opened three weeks ago in Oceanside, is San Diego County's first location. Plans are to open five more in the county by the end of 2009 and some one-time Starbucks locales may be among them, said Leo Tudela, chief executive officer.
