Sep. 22--We've been chatting amiably, strolling through one of San Jose's largest shopping malls, but the talk ceases as we close in on our target. Our mission: To see if we can detect the aroma of sweet rolls from 10 yards away.
As the distance narrows, we exchange inquiring looks, but even when the frosting-covered buns are close enough to touch, neither of us detects the
