Consumer grocery receipts contradict Americans' intent to improve their diets. The Annual Consumer Expenditures Study shows consumers spending more on sabotage foods and empty calories such as candy, processed snacks, soft drinks and water than they do on fresh produce. (Progressive Grocer, September 15, 2008; see below.) Additionally, data indicates increased consumption of foods high in saturated fats, mixes and ready to eat items, along with frequent visits to fast food restaurants, all of which contribute to the growing health concerns of the nation (see also California Walnut Board).
