ATLANTA--Oct. 1--Delta Air Lines begins its defense of Florida today.
Delta's new low-fare, no-frills division, Delta Express, takes flight in an effort to boost the Atlanta-based airline's traditional strength in the Sunshine State just months after the mother of all cheap-seaters, Southwest Airlines, arrived there.
The prospect of a showdown in Florida, which accounts for 20 percent of Delta's revenue, has already provoked bravado on both sides.
Delta marketing chief Robert Coggin told a trade journal that Delta is "kicking (Southwest's) butt" in Salt Lake City, where the two compete head-to-head.
