The Justice Department announced that it will monitor the primary elections in East Carroll, Jefferson and Orleans Parishes, La. on October 4, 2008, to ensure compliance with federal voting rights statutes (see also U.S. Department of Justice).
Under the Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department is authorized to ask the Office of Personnel Management to send federal observers to areas that are specially covered by the law or by a federal court order. Federal observers will be assigned to monitor polling place activities in East Carroll Parish based on the special coverage provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
