BOSTON - Six years ago, sociologist Sharlene Hesse-Biber got the idea of starting a national organization of women who teach in Catholic colleges and universities. She had her own war stories to tell; she knew others did too.
From her position at Boston College, where she is associate professor of sociology and cofounder of the women's studies program, she set to work. The sociology department agreed to give her an office. She recruited an intern by advertising in Sojourners, an ecumenical journal linking biblical theology and social justice. Next she and the intern ordered catalogs from Catholic schools, compiled a database of thousands of female academics, and, ...
