CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1996-- LAN switching start-up Extreme Networks today announced it has acquired Mammoth Technology Inc., an Agoura Hills, Calif. developer of high speed Ethernet Media Access Control (MAC) integrated circuit (IC) technology.

The MAC is the component of a LAN switch that controls communication over an Ethernet link and is used to build high speed LAN switches based on Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet. Gigabit Ethernet is the emerging standard for transmitting data at 100 times the original 10 Mbps speed of Ethernet which is most commonly used for LAN communications.
