The proponents of Question 1 are dangling the claim that the state's 3.4 million taxpayers would save $3,700 on average - every year - if they voted to eliminate the state income tax on Election Day.
But opponents who encompass business and labor, as well as advocates for community programs, environmental protection and an array of services for the elderly, veterans and the needy, are warning that passage would cripple vital state services, raise property taxes and cut funding for local police, fire and school operations.
