The Fischer-Tropsch-based natural gas-to-liquids (GTL) process that converts natural gas into diesel and other middle distillates has been getting a lot of headlines in recent years, but moving under the radar have been a number of coal-to-liquids (CTL) projects, some using the Fischer-Tropsch process or some other methods, but also a few that convert the coal into methanol and then into gasoline (MTG) using a patented Exxon Mobil technology.
