Sea ice is not visible from most of the United States. The majority of it is locked up on the top and bottom of the globe, in Earth's polar oceans. Although most students in the United States may never have a chance to view it, studying sea ice is essential. This remote phenomenon is critical to Earth's overall health.
Sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctic cools our planet. One of the most reflective substances on Earth, sea ice reflects heat from the sun back into the atmosphere.
