"WHAT IS TRUTH?," asked the cynical Pontius Pilate at Jesus' trial. The question needs to be raised again. Let's look at how this greatest of philosophical quests, the search for truth, fares today.
As a witness in court, one is enjoined to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." As children, we were admonished by our parents and teachers always to tell the truth. Yet, we learned from others that we could tell a white lie if we crossed our fingers behind our backs. Adults use a similar subterfuge in making mental reservations.
