Rugs are traditionally identified according to their basic patterns. Many of the rug designs are so strong, they can be classified after a quick glance. But in some cases, only an Oriental-rug scholar can make a judgment.

There are no rules. Often, rug patterns are named after their town or society of origin. Over the years, many of these names have become generic.

A rug that is power-woven in Dalton, Gal, may bear the name of a weaving town in the hill country of India. Conversely, the rugs we know as "Chinese" may be made in China but carry the Aubusson patterns that are totally foreign to the Chinese culture.
