In Colonial times, only the wealthy could afford fine handmade rugs from Persia. When the industrial revolution brought Bigelow's machine-made rugs to America in the 19th century, the costs were still prohibitive to all but a few. Still, common people craved the warmth and decorative qualities that rugs could bring to simple dirt or plank floors.

Although the art of making rugs by hand never reached large-scale artistic levels in America, various types of rugs have made their mark over the years. There were several forms of cottage rug making in Colonial times, all using recycled textile materials.
