HAND-TUFTED RUGS

Hand-tufting is a blend of machinery and hand craftsmanship. Technically, the rugs are classified as hand-made. Hand-tufted rugs are created by substituting the time-consuming craft of hand-knotting with the faster method of looping yarn through a canvas-type backing with a hand-held tufting gun.

To the casual eye, hand-tufted rugs may closely resemble their oriental counterparts. They are made with the same wool and undergo the same washing and carving techniques. Technically, however, they do not qualify as oriental rugs, because they are not woven on a warp-and-weft foundation.
