The Tories haven't laid a hand on Blair
IN A YEAR FILLED WlITH BAD WEEKS, last week was one of John Major's worst. His nemesis, Labor leader Tony Blair, turned his party's often fractious annual conference in Blackpool into a virtual core:nation. Even the less friendly press gushed. In a city famous for rain, the sun came out for three straight days. The party's prospects seem equally bright, after 17 years in which Margaret Thatcher and then Major have held power. Thrilled by September polls showing Major's approval rating at 29 percent, the lowest level of any prime minister since 1973, Labour rallied to the leader's battle cry for next year's general election: ...
