Mary Roux's debut in goal for the New England College field hockey team was interesting to say the least.
The Pilgrims' starting goalkeeper quit the team during the third game of the 2007 season, causing Roux to switch from her usual forward spot to net. Roux, of Auburn, is an ice hockey goalie, but had never played the position in field hockey before. She had practiced there a little bit as a just-in-case, emergency backup. She ended up playing goal the rest of the year and helping NEC to its sixth straight Commonwealth Coast Conference title and NCAA berth.
