Years ago, Frieda "Mamma" Loehmann, who paid for leftover designer fashions from a cash wad in her stockings, was renowned for selecting only the finest off-price apparel for her Brooklyn store.
The company she founded 75 years ago is now a publicly held chain with 71 outlets, but it is striving to maintain its fashion edge. So next month, Loehmann's will cross the bridge into Manhattan for the first time, launching its most important site - a 60,000-square-foot store situated in the center of trendy Chelsea. The new downtown showcase will be the largest store in the chain and its flagship.
