Article: Too many specialists.(Modern Physician)

How many medical specialists will it take to screw in a light bulb in the year 2000? About 37,000 fewer than it takes today.

It's no joke. Healthcare prognosticators are homing in on a consensus: The United States has a surplus of physicians in certain specialties and regions, and too many more are flowing through the pipeline.

"The evidence is fairly overwhelming that we're training too many specialists and have too many doctors," said Richard D. Lamm, former governor of Colorado and chairman of the Pew Health Professions Commission.
