Clinical trials sponsored by drug companies to study the treatment of breast cancer are more likely than independently financed studies to find that the treatments are effective, according to a new study. The study reviewed research published in 1993, 1998, and 2003. In 2003, drug companies were involved in 57% of the trials, compared with 44% in 1993. Of the industry-sponsored trials in 2003, 84% had positive results, compared with 62% of those with no backing from drug manufacturers. In 2003, two of every three independently financed trials were randomized, compared with one of every three industry-sponsored trials.
