The first therapy that would direct a patient's immune system to attack a cancer tumor has been endorsed by a federal advisory committee. The Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapies Advisory Committee, an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), voted 13 to 4 that substantial evidence existed that the treatment was effective in men with advanced prostate cancer and 17 to 0 that the therapy was safe.
The vote increases the likelihood of FDA approval for the therapy, Provenge[R] (sipuleucel-T, Dendreon Corporation). Still, some members of the panel expressed reservations about the strength of the data. A larger trial is now under way and will be ...
