The use of robotic technology to perform laparoscopic surgery may improve survival rates for patients with prostate cancer, according to a study by urologic oncologists at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's multidisciplinary genitourinary cancer center.
The study found that a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) performed with robot technology can reduce positive surgical margins (i.e., when cancer cells, viewed under a microscope, are seen at the edge of a specimen, meaning that cancerous cells are likely to remain in the patient).
