Although oncology nurses are familiar with the dermatologic manifestations of the chemotherapies and radiation they have used for many years, they may not know how to recognize, manage, or counsel their patients about the distinctive skin toxicities associated with newer targeted therapies. In their October 2007 Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing article, Esper, Gale, and Muehlbauer reviewed the available literature on such skin toxicities and offered guidance for management. Because most targeted agents are relatively new, extensive experience and clinical trial results do not yet exist, but the article summarizes the information currently available.
