The Victoria and Albert Museum in London was the first museum in the world to provide refreshment areas. Initially these were in a temporary building constructed in 1857, adjacent to the Brompton Oratory. A novel experience for visitors, the half-timbered, mock-Tudor building that contained the rooms was both admired and satirized by contemporary critics.(1)
In the year in which the centenary of the death of William Morris is commemorated by a major exhibition at the museum, attention is also drawn to the Green Dining Room (Pl.
