Between 1958 and 1975, subsidiaries of French conglomerates Thomson, Alcatel, and Matra moved into France's Brittany, setting up R&D operations in three towns - Lannion, Brest, and Rennes, where the Joint Research Center for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (CCETT) opened in 1972.

Today, Brittany is a center for global telecommunications in general, and telecommunications R&D in particular. Companies throughout the European Union have set up manufacturing and R&D facilities in the region. More recently, Japanese and U.S. high-tech corporations - including Canon, Mitsubishi, Lucent Technologies, and VLSI - have established branches in Brittany.
