The initial challenge in conducting this sampling was arriving at a working definition of a tactical workstation. A "workstation" is not a precisely defined term. The station is best described both by its attributes and by those features that distinguish it from other types of computers. The questionnaire submitted to manufacturers offered the following guidelines - "The workstation will generally possess the following features: it is designed to operate in a network environment; UNIX or a UNIX-based language is employed; the central processor is based upon RISC architecture; and the components and enclosure are selected to enable operation in harsh environments."
