On a business trip to Chicago in 1885, a Worcester businessman wrote back to his family that he had "run across Teddy Roosevelt this evening. He is on his way to his ranch in Dakota." Charles G. Washburn, "Charley" to Roosevelt, had been a classmate at Harvard. The Dakota ranch was Roosevelt's place of solace after the death of his wife and mother on the same day, Valentine's Day, the previous year.
This Monday, Oct. 27, marks the 150th anniversary of TR's birthday.
Washburn went on in his letter to say that he and Teddy had been "talking vigorously all evening." On the ranch, Washburn reported, TR had no companions ...
