In lucid and stylish prose, Cohen has written an engaging biography of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a.k.a. Lewis Carroll. His account of the genius who was both spiritually troubled and inspired by an inclination for prepubescent children, especially girls, is convincing and sympathetic. Nowhere is one disappointed by the treatment of either the life or the literature - indeed, the latter is keenly illuminated by biographical data.
