The recent Supreme Court decision striking down the exclusion of women from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), a state-supported institution of higher education, represents a victory for the principle of equal opportunity for girls and women at all levels of education.(1)
While the Court's decision is narrow in scope, addressing the particular circumstances of an almost unique single-sex military institution, the depth and breadth of the majority's logic make the VMI case one of the high-water marks in the 20th-century struggle to overcome stereotypes of women and to validate women's constitutional right to be treated with respect equal to men.
