One does not have to be a devout conservative to admire National Review, which the late Bill Buckley launched in November 1955 to give conservatism (that is, those who govern best, govern least) an intelligent Adam Smith-/Edmond Burke-like voice after the vitriol of Joe McCarthy. That it worked brilliantly can be seen in the success of Buckley disciples Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan, and it was another conservative, Newsweek columnist/ABC News commentator George Will, who, at the time of NR's 50th anniversary, credited Buckley for "winning the Cold War" (min, November 14, 2005).
