China's government delayed action over contaminated milk products for several weeks because it did not wish to allow bad publicity to distract from the Olympic Games, according to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark. The problem surfaced at the Shijiazhuang Sanlu Group, which is 43% owned by the Fronterra Dairy Cooperative of New Zealand, on August 2, with concentrations of up to 2,563mg/kg of melamine, a substance used in plastics, cleaning products and chemical fertilizers.
