Making a mark is a pretty straightforward thing. Most of us have been doing it our whole lives with nothing more than a pencil and a ruler for a guide. These simple tools have always done what we wanted them to do. And they always will, as long as we build things like porches, fences and simple toy boxes for the kids. But if you're interested in making fine furniture or high-end cabinetry, then your layout requirements will change. In many cases a simple pencil mark is just too imprecise to yield the exacting joinery that's called for in the best work.
