A new Australian law that is expected to see 492,000 drop out of private health insurance is set to pass the upper house of parliament after Health Minister Nicola Roxon agreed with Senators on changes to surcharges. The law will allow single wage earners on a salary less than A$70,000 ($46,028) to opt out of private health insurance and have access to free national health care without paying a previously imposed 1% health levy though their income tax. The Senate rejected the Labor government's first attempt to pass the legislation, saying the A$100,000 level it had proposed to allow single people to get free health care without paying a penalty was too high.
