It's a certifiable fact that you can't film a Jane Austen novel these days without involving one of the extraordinary daughters of actress Phyllida Law and the late actor/stage director Eric Thompson. Their eldest, Emma, scripted and starred in Sense and Sensibility. Their youngest, Sophie, played the peevish hypochondriac, Mary Musgrove, in Persuasion and is devastating as Miss Bates in the recently released Emma - in which Law plays her deaf-as-a-post mama.
