In its own way almost as famous as Sir George Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 'Grout' is now in its fifth edition. The eminent American musicologist, Professor Donald Grout (1902-1987), first published his History of Western Music in 1960. In later editions he was aided by Professor Claude Palisca, who - as he says now in his Preface - first 'sought to preserve intact . . . Professor Grout's felicitous prose and critical reflections.' But, as Eric Blom found when revising Grove in 1954, there comes a time when a new approach is needed. Accordingly, says Professor Palisca, 'the entire book has been re-written.'
