Oct. 25--Boston gained its first major biomanufacturing facility yesterday when Genzyme Corp. received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to begin mass producing a drug to treat Gaucher's disease at its Allston plant.
Yesterday's announcement came nearly five months after Cambridge-based Genzyme asked the FDA to approve the Allston drug manufacturing facility. Facilities that manufacture drugs for human consumption require FDA approval.
Initially budgeted for $75 million, the 185,000-square-foot facility wound up costing $150 million because of major design changes, additional biopharmaceutical production equipment and two years of ...
