Northern Border Pipeline Ltd. won't open its next natural gas pipeline expansion to Chicago for two years, but it's already looking to expand again by 2000.

"You haven't heard the end of what Northern Border can offer," said Bob Hill, vice president for Northern Border, which will add 700 MMcfd of capacity on its line from Canada to Chicago in November 1998.

Hill said the project's US$793 million cost left gas shippers with the idea that Omaha-based Northern Border had stopped thinking about competing with other pipeline projects, such as the proposed Alliance Pipeline from northeast British Columbia to Chicago.
