I am pleased that Professor Gabor accepts that some Canadians use firearms for self protection (Gabor 1996). The argument now is about how many Canadians do so and how many lives are saved. These questions are important and deserve to be debated publicly. If the private ownership of firearms can be shown to have social benefits, such as protecting people from being injured or killed, then any evaluation of the role of firearms in society must include the number of lives saved, as well as the number of lives lost.
