Used cooking oil and a little ingenuity could save the Westfield School District $30,000 this year.
Since June, the district about 60 miles north of Madison has been making its own biodiesel fuel to power school buses, lawn mowers, a tractor and a dump truck.
And with the addition of a second production facility, the 1,239-student district will soon have the ability to make 160 gallons of fuel per day, which could save the district $50,000 to $60,000 per year in fuel costs.
