ABSTRACT. The practice of marginalia--reader's annotations on the margins of books--has been a feature of the modus operandi of numerous writers, of whom Coleridge offers one of the best-known examples. From his Durban days onward, Fernando Pessoa too developed this practice, which may provide valuable clues regarding the links between his writings and his personal library. When closely read, the author's book-annotations reveal more than mere influences. From the learning of English to the presence of his (pre-)heteronyms, the marginalia transmit the emerging plurality of Pessoa in the development of his writing.
