On May 9, 1996 the Knoxville Utilities Board (KUB) held the ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the startup of Tennessee's first permanent pilot plant. The two-story pilot plant was custom-designed to treat seven gpm in each of two treatment trains. One train is used for control and the other train is used to check the effects of process variables on the utility's 60-mgd water treatment plant. The pilot plant, designed by Burns and McDonnell of Kansas City, Missouri, will help Knoxville Utilities Board meet future regulations, reduce chemical cost through process chemistry optimization, and provide a training tool for plant operations staff.
