NEVER mind the presidential election: what was preoccupying most New Yorkers in late October was the struggle between the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves to win baseball's "World Series" (in which, curiously enough, only North American teams take part). And, despite some Zantac moments, the Yankees did it, beating the Braves by four games to two and winning the World Series for the first time in 18 years. But as New York's mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, led the city's biggest-ever ticker-tape parade for the team on October 29th, one question may well have been troubling him: will the Yankees still be a New York team the next time they win?
