The gospel of Matthew contains a strong emphasis on judgment and punishment. This week we hear, "As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 25:30). The phrase "weeping and gnashing of teeth" appears six times in Matthew, and three times it is paired with "outer darkness" as the place where those who are punished are cast.
